At the age of fifteen, Spears hired Larry Rudolph as her manager. Rudolph took her to many record lablels but the outcome looked poor. Until Spears met with Jive Records. They signed her as an artist. Britney went right to work on her debut album in the summer of 1997 with help from sweedish producer Max Martin. The first single from the album was released in Novemeber of 1998, called "...Baby One More Time". It was also the name of the album. The song recieved a maximum amount of radio airplay. The song was also accompanied with a music video. The video showed Spears and her dancer friends in a catholic school girls outfit dancing around parts of a school such as the hall, the gym and the courtyard. The video is always referenced as the best music video in the last 90's. It was also the video that jump started Britney's career
At the same time, Spears stated that she was going to stay a virgin until marrage. Though it was hard for some people to believe, because of her sexy music videos, performances and her infamous 1999 Rolling Stones photoshoot where she appeared in her undergarments and robe.
With the help of the video, "...Baby One More Time" peaked at the #1 postion on The Billboard Hot 100, her only number one single in the US. Before the release of her debut album, Spears went on various mall tours to support the album. She also opened for Boyband, Nsync, where she became romantically involved with lead singer, Justin Timberlake, who she had been on "The Mickey Mouse Club" just four years before.
The album, "...Baby One More Time" debuted at #1 on The Billboard 200. It would peak at #1 five more times since it's debut. As of 2006, the album has sold around 14 million copies in the US, and 25 million copies worldwide. The success of the album can also be based on the other four singles released from the album, "Sometimes", "(You Drive Me) Crazy", "Born To Make You Happy" and "From The Bottom Of My Broken Heart". At the time, Other female pop artists such as Christina Aguilera, Jessica Simpson, and Mandy Moore were emerging. Though Spears had lead the pack with much more popularity than the others.
After the success of her debut album, many critics stated that her second album would become a sophmore slump. That was far from the truth. In early 2000, Spears released her first single from her sophmore effort, "Oops!... I Did It Again". Following tradition from her first album, The album was also named "Oops!... I Did It Again". The single peaked within the top 10 of the US charts and became other #1 world hit.
On May 16th, 2000 "Oops!... I Did It Again" was released. It sold 1.3 million copies within it's first week of sales. Making it the fastest selling album from a female artist in history. The album remained in the top three of the US charts for 17 week weeks. With the help of the albums other three singles, "Lucky", "Stronger" and "Don't Let Me Be The Last To Know", It would go on to sell 10 million units in the US alone and 20 million units worldwide.
Spears then got to work on her third album taking more creative control, writing six of the albums songs. She also teamed up with The Neptunes for the first single, "I'm A Slave 4 U". The video for "Slave" was like nothing she had ever done before. The setting, A hot suanna. The plot, get as swetty as you can. It is noted as one of her most sexual videos to date.
Her third album, "Britney" was released on November 6th, 2001. It debuted at the #1 postion in the US. It made her the only female artist in history to have her first three albums debut at #1. The album would go on to sell 5 million copies in the US, and 15 million copies worldwide. "Britney" is most notable for having the most singles than any other Britney album. She released "I'm Not A Girl, Not Yet A Woman", "Overprotected (Album Version)", "Overprotected (DarkChild Remix)", "I Love Rock N Roll" (A cover of The Arrows song, later covered by Joan Jett), "Anticapting" and "Boys (The Co-Ed Remix Featuring Pharell Williams)".With the help of the "Britney" album, Spears would embark on her first world tour. "The Dream Within A Dream" Tour. It became her most successful tour to date and one of the most successful female tours to date.
During the "Britney" album era, Spears also tried her talent at something new. Acting. She appeared in her first featured film Crossroads. It debuted in theathers on Febuaray 15th, 2002. It debuted at #2 in the box office. With a budget of $12 million, the movie gained $37 million in the US, and $24 million in foregin sales. Also in 2002, Spears made a cameo in "Austin Powers: Goldmember". The track "Boys" was used in the film and Mike Meyers appeared in the video clip for "Boys (The Co-Ed Remix)".
At the time, Britney and Justin Timberlake ended there four year relationship. Timberlake had circulated that Spears was unfaithful to him. Justin went on to tell the public that he had taken Spears virginity. Just weeks later, Justin threw another blow to Spears with the release of his new music video for "Cry Me A River". In the video Timberlake seeks revenge on Spears lookalike while singing the lyrics "You don't have to say what you did/I already know, I found out from him/Now there's just no chance, for you and me, there'll never be/And don't it make you sad about it". Britney then declared that she was going to take a small break from the music bussiness after the Justin fiasco.
Spears shook it off and made her comeback at the 2003 Video Music Awards. She prefromed Madonna's "Like A Virgin" and "Hollywood" with Madonna, Christina Aguilera, and Missy Elliot. In the middle of "Hollywood", Madonna turned to Spears and kissed her. Then turned to Christina to kiss her also, but the camera cut to Timberlake's reaction to Britney/Madonna Kiss. This enraged Aguilera, which led her to make less than positive comments about Spears in future interviews.
About two months later, Spears teamed up with her idol Madonna again for the first single "Me Against The Music" from her fourth album, "In The Zone". This album was different from any other album she had done before. This album is her most sexual album to date. "In The Zone" was released on November 18th, 2003. It debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200. She broke yet another record. This time, she broke her own. She is the only female artist to have her first four albums debut at #1.
Just days before the release of the album's second single "Toxic", on January 3rd, 2004, Britney shocked the world. During a trip to Las Vegas with childhood friend Jason Alexander, Spears and Alexander were married. The marriage was annulled fifty five hours later. The stunt had abosorbed alot of media coverage. The week of the marriage, Spears made an appearance on many magazine covers.
In early 2004, Spears released "Toxic" to radio stations and the video clip to television. It is her most successful single behind "...Baby One More Time". It peaked within the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100, it went to #1 in the UK, Canada, and Australia. It peaked in the top 5 in almost every country it charted in. The music video for "Toxic" became very popular. During some sequences of the video, Spears was naked with tiny dimaonds all over her body. It is one of her most sexual videos ever. Because of this, Toxic was banned from the MTV daytime rotation. The ban was lifted a mere week later. "Toxic" is also the first video to ever recieve a nomination in the "Video Of The Year" catergory at the MTV Video Music Awards. The track would also gain Britney her first grammy. At the 2005 ceramony, "Toxic" won in the "Best Dance Recording" catergory. Soon after the release of "Toxic", she headed on yet another tour. "The Onyx Hotel Tour". Some parents did not approve of some of the performances the show included. During "Touch Of My Hand" Spears in a bathtub, simulates masterbaution. In the next sequences, she gets in bed with a dancer where they both dance provocitavly.
Other than "Me Against The Music" and "Toxic" she released "Everytime" and "Outrageous". The "Everytime" music video caused much controversary. When Spears announced she was going to release it, she stated she wanted to base the video theme on suicide. Major uproar was unleashed at the thought of the idea. Britney changed the video, but when it premiered in April of 2004, the video still included a dying pop star, not to suicide, but to a head injury in the begining of the video. Spears is hit by a camera, goes to her hotel room to fight with her boyfriends then gets into the bathtub, feels her head and notices blood. She drownds in the tub.
In the summer of 2004, in the New York City while shooting the video for "Outrageous", Spears fell and injured her knee causing her to cancel the video shoot and all the remaining dates of "The Onyx Hotel" tour. At the same time of the injury, Spears and boyfriend Kevin Federline announced publicaly that they were engaged. Federline was a dance from California. He has been a back-up dancer for Christina Millian, Pink and Spears' ex Justin Timberlake.
Britney Spears and Kevin Federline were married on September 18th, 2004 in a secret ceramony in Studio City, California. Spears, at first did not want to sign a prenuptial agreement, but finally decided too.
Just two months after her marriage to Kevin Federline, Britney released her first Greatest Hits album, "Greatest Hits: My Prerogative". It featured three new songs, "My Prerogative", "Do Somethin" and "I've Just Begun (Having My Fun)" (I've Just Begun was a unreleased track from the "In The Zone" album). It debuted at #4 on The Billboard 200. It was her first album to not debut at #1. Videos for "My Prerogative" and "Do Somethin" were released. In late 2004, Britney stated in a radio show interview that she was going to release a new album named, "The Oringal Doll", and gave a clip of a new song, "Mona Lisa".
After the release of "Do Somethin'" in January, on her offical website (Britneyspears.com) Britney announced that she and Kevin were going to be expecting there first child. Because of this, Spears scratched out all plans for the "The Orginal Doll" album.
In June of 2005, Spears and UPN released "Britney and Kevin: Chaotic". A reality show that used home movies of Britney Spears and Kevin Federline during "The Onyx Hotel" tour. Episodes included events leading up to Spears' and Federline's wedding. The final one hour finale included clips from there wedding day and it also included a new music video for "Someday (I Will Understand)". The song was written about then, her unborn son. On the "Someday (I Will Understand)" single, she released three other new songs, "Chaotic" (The theme to "Britney and Kevin: Chaotic"), "Over To You Now" and a 2005 version of "Mona Lisa".
On September 14th, 2005 Britney Spears gave birth to her first son, Sean Preston Federline at Santa Monica UCLA Medical Center by a scheduled caesarean section. This was Spears' first child, Federline's third. After his birth, Britney and Kevin posed with Sean for People Magazine. Soon after, Spears backed out of releasing the photos. It was too late. The photos had already leaked to the internet.
On November 22nd, 2005 Britney released "B In The Mix: The Remixes". It included remixes of some of her previous hits. It also included a new remixed song, "And Then We Kiss (Junkie XL Remix)". Though it was never offically released, it became a hit on the Billboard "Hot Dance Airplay" chart. It also peaked at #22 on the world single chart. The album itself had moderate success. It sold roughly 15,000 copies in it's first week of release with no promotion whatsoever. It debuted at the #134 postion on the Billboard 200. It also debuted at #4 on the US Electronic albums chart.
In March 2006, Britney made her first primetime television appearence in years on NBC's hit sitcom, "Will & Grace". Spears recieved critcal acclaim for her role on the show. A month later, she made an appearance on The Early Show special, the first Marti Gras since Hurricane Katrina. In May of 2006, Britney appeared on "The David Letterman Show" and announced that she and husband Kevin Federline are expecting there second child together.
A month later, Pregnant Spears appeared on an episode of "Dateline NBC" discussing her current battle with the press. Spears recieved harsh criticism for her appearance on the show. Week later, Newly brunette Britney appeared nude on "Harper's Bazar" magazine.
On September 14th, 2006 Britney gave birth to her second son, again by a planned caesarean section. Days after People Magazine reported that the baby's name was Sutton Pierce Federline. This Turned out not to be true. His name is 'Jayden James Federline'
A day after the birth of her second child, Spears' offical website was taken down and was replaced by a picture of a tiger with Spears' picture fading into the background with the text "New Offical Website Comming Soon".
